Running from the Law

I dreamt about running from the law even though we did nothing wrong. You were a movie star like movie stars once were: Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall. You wore giant earrings. We drove an Aston Martin. We were in California. The air was hot and dry and smelled like oranges. I wasn’t wearing any shoes.

You were with me because it was better than being famous. That’s what you said. In my dream you said:

“Being with you is better than being a star.”

That might be the most beautiful thing anyone has ever said to anyone else. Ever.
